What Is Laser Dentistry?
Laser dentistry uses focused light energy in place of many traditional tools, like the drill or scalpel. The laser gently and precisely treats only the area that needs care, preserving the healthy hard and soft tissue around it.
The laser doesn't simply match traditional dentistry; it elevates it, bringing greater precision, built in disinfection and more comfortable healing to the treatments you already know.
The Fotona LightWalker Advantage
Different tissues respond best to different kinds of light. The LightWalker combines two laser wavelengths in one system: an Er:YAG laser for hard tissue and an Nd:YAG laser for soft tissue, so each receives exactly the precision it needs.
This range gives us remarkable versatility in treatment, comfort and precision, elevating everything from everyday care to advanced surgery.

Dual wavelength technology for hard and soft tissue
-
Precise, conservative treatment
-
Gentle disinfection as treatment happens
-
Settings tailored to each patient and procedure

THE LASER DIFFERENCE
How Laser Care Feels Different
Technology is meaningful when it makes care feel easier. Here is what many of our patients notice.
Fewer Needles
Many fillings and gum procedures can be completed with little to no needles, so you leave without that lingering numb feeling.
Minimal Bleeding
The laser seals tissue as it works, which means less bleeding and, in many cases, no stitches.
Quiet and Calm
No drill vibration and no high pitched whirring. A light tapping sensation is often all you notice.

Comfortable Healing
Laser energy disinfects the treatment area and supports healing, so many patients feel like themselves again sooner.
More of Your Natural Tooth
The laser treats only what needs care, preserving healthy enamel and structure for long term strength.
Efficient Visits
Many procedures take less time, and some concerns can be addressed in fewer appointments.
LASER TREATMENTS
What We Treat With Laser Dentistry
From everyday fillings to gum health and surgical care, laser dentistry supports many parts of your smile. During your visit, we will recommend the approach that best fits your needs.

Laser Fillings and Cavity Treatment
Gently remove decay without the drill, often with no needles at all. A wonderful option for small to moderate cavities and for patients who feel anxious about traditional fillings.
Laser Assisted Root Canal Therapy
Light activated irrigation reaches deep into the tiny canals of the tooth to clean and disinfect more thoroughly, supporting comfortable, predictable root canal treatment.
Laser Assisted Oral Surgery
From extractions to implant placement and grafting, the laser brings added precision, disinfection and comfort to surgical care.
Laser Teeth Whitening
Gentle laser energy activates professional whitening gel for a noticeably brighter smile in a single visit. Because the light energizes the gel without heating the tooth, treatment is designed to keep sensitivity to a minimum, and it makes a beautiful first step before smile design or veneers.
Laser Gum Disease Treatment
A comfortable, minimally invasive approach to periodontal therapy. The laser cleans below the gumline and disinfects gum pockets, supporting healthier tissue without traditional cutting and stitches.
Laser Smile Aesthetics
Refined finishing details for your smile, including softening of fine lines around the lips and mouth, LipLase lip enhancement and laser gum contouring, designed to complement smile design and veneers.
Canker Sore and Cold Sore Relief
A few minutes of gentle laser treatment can ease the discomfort of a painful sore and support faster healing. Many patients also find cold sores return less often and appear less noticeable afterward.

Laser Implant Care
When inflammation or infection develops around a dental implant (peri implantitis), the laser reaches and disinfects the porous implant surface in ways traditional instruments can't, supporting healthy surrounding tissue and the long term health of your implant.
Laser Frenectomy for Tongue and Lip Ties
A quick, gentle release of a tight tongue or lip tie for adults, supporting easier movement, comfort and function. The laser minimizes bleeding and typically requires no stitches.
Gentle Crown and Veneer Removal
When an older crown or veneer needs replacing, the laser can often release it without drilling, preserving the natural tooth underneath. If a tooth with a ceramic or porcelain crown needs a root canal, the laser can gently remove the crown instead of drilling through it, so it can often be reused.

Gum Tone Refinement
Darker areas of gum pigmentation can be gently lightened for a more even, healthy frame that lets your new veneers shine.
Healing That Keeps You on Schedule
Laser treated tissue typically heals quickly and comfortably, keeping your smile design timeline on track, including our same day design experience.
LASER ENHANCED VENEERS
Elevating Every Veneer Case
Veneers and smile design are a signature part of Smile Theory. The LightWalker elevates every stage of a veneer case, from shaping the frame of your smile to final placement, so your result looks natural, balanced and refined. Every detail is considered, down to the frame around your smile.
Precise Gum Framing
Laser gum contouring creates a balanced, symmetrical gumline so every veneer sits in harmony with your features. It can often be completed as part of your smile design visit.
Minimally Invasive Crown Lengthening
When teeth appear short, the laser can gently reveal more natural tooth length with less disruption than traditional surgery, for proportions that look effortless.
Conservative Veneer Replacement
Older veneers and crowns can often be released without drilling, preserving the natural enamel beneath, in keeping with our no prep and minimal prep philosophy.
A Clean, Controlled Field
The laser gently manages gum tissue and minimizes bleeding during preparation and placement, supporting a precise fit and seamless margins.
LASER ASSISTED SURGERY
Advanced Surgical Care, With a Gentler Recovery
Surgical care is a meaningful part of what we do at Smile Theory, from extractions and dental implants to full arch solutions and grafting. The LightWalker allows us to bring the precision and comfort of laser care into every stage of the surgical experience.

LASER SMILE AESTHETICS
The Finishing Details of a Beautiful Smile
A smile is framed by more than teeth. The smoothness of the skin around the mouth, the fullness of the lips and the balance of the gumline shape how a smile feels and how naturally it fits your face. With the LightWalker, these finishing details can be refined gently, with no injections and minimal downtime, as part of a thoughtfully designed result.
Fine Line Smoothing
Fine lines around the lips and mouth can be gently softened with laser treatment that stimulates your own natural collagen. There are no needles, no fillers and minimal downtime, and results build naturally over a short series of visits for a smoother, refreshed look that complements your smile.
LipLase Lip Enhancement
A non invasive laser treatment that gently warms the lip tissue to stimulate your own natural collagen. The result is softer, more hydrated and subtly fuller looking lips with gentle definition, all with no needles, no fillers and minimal downtime.
Treatment is typically a short series of sessions spaced a couple of weeks apart. A beautiful complement to smile design and veneers, for results that feel effortless and entirely your own.
BETTER SLEEP
NightLase Snoring Treatment: Quieter Nights, More Rested Mornings
Snoring affects more than your sleep. It can leave you tired during the day and disrupt the rest of the person beside you. NightLase is a gentle, non invasive laser treatment designed to reduce snoring, with no surgery, no device to wear at night, and no downtime.

PHOTOBIOMODULATION
Light That Supports Your Natural Healing

Photobiomodulation uses gentle, low level laser light to energize your cells and support your body's own healing processes. It is painless, needle free and non invasive, and it can be paired with many of your treatments or used on its own.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Laser Dentistry Questions, Answered
Laser dentistry is well studied and well established, and it elevates what we are able to do for our patients, from everyday care to advanced treatment. It is natural to want to know exactly what to expect, so Dr. Z and our team have answered the questions we hear most often from patients across Marlboro, Holmdel, Colts Neck, Middletown, Red Bank and the rest of Monmouth County, from comfort and safety to recovery, insurance and cost.
Don't see your question below? Give us a call or stop by. We are always happy to talk it through with you.

Does laser dentistry hurt?
Can a laser replace the drill for fillings?
Most patients feel very little during laser treatment. Many fillings and gum procedures can be completed with little to no needles, and when anesthesia is helpful, we always make sure you are comfortable before we begin.
In many cases, yes, especially for small to moderate cavities. Some situations, such as replacing large older fillings, may still call for traditional tools. We will always recommend the most comfortable and conservative option for your tooth.
Is laser dentistry safe?
How long is recovery after laser gum treatment?
Yes. Laser dentistry is well studied, and the LightWalker is built with advanced precision and safety controls. Treatment is performed by our experienced laser clinicians, and you wear protective eyewear throughout your visit.
Because the laser seals and disinfects tissue as it works, many patients notice less tenderness and return to their normal routine quickly. We will guide you through simple aftercare so healing stays comfortable.
Is the laser used during oral surgery and implants?
Is laser dentistry covered by insurance?
Yes. The laser can assist with implant care, extractions, grafting and soft tissue procedures, helping to minimize bleeding, disinfect the treatment site and support a more comfortable recovery.
Coverage is based on the procedure, not the tool used, so a laser filling is typically covered like any other filling. Our team takes care of your insurance claims and can submit a complimentary pre-treatment estimate to help you understand what to expect.
How much does laser dentistry cost?
Can laser treatment help with snoring?
Cost depends on the treatment you need. After your evaluation, you receive a clear treatment plan with transparent pricing before anything begins.
For many patients, yes. NightLase gently tightens tissue at the back of the mouth to reduce snoring, typically over three short sessions spaced a few weeks apart. It is not the right fit for everyone, so we begin with a careful evaluation, including airway insight from our whole head CBCT imaging, and coordinate with your physician when sleep apnea is a concern.
